History

The origin of the city is a small village named Charnoy, in 1666 the Spaniards build there a fortress which was named Charleroy in the honor of the child-king Charles II.

The local airport, Charleroi Brussels South, is used by Wizzair, Tarom and Ryanair.

Public Transport

Public transport is run by TEC (Transport En Commun), the Wallon public transport company. The greater Charleroi region is served by bus lines and a Lightrail or Metro system (Métro Léger de Charleroi) which is known for not being completed: parts of the track are built but never put in use.
