Bus 174 Bus 174 is a documentary film made in 2002 about the famous bus hijacking that occurred in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil two years previously. (Sando do Nascimento), a young man who from a poor background, bungled a robbery and ended up holding the passengers on a bus hostage for four hours. The whole event was caught live on television.

It is the debut film of directors Felipe Lacerda and José Padilha.

The movie explains this incident and what life is like in the slums and favelas of Rio de Janeiro and how the criminal justice system in Brazil treats the lower classes.

Distribution

This movie is filmed in Portuguese and is widely seen outside of Brazil. It was voted "one of the ten best films of the year" by "The New York Times". It won the Grammy for best documentary in 2005 after being shown on HBOCINEMAX with great success. It won over 23 prizes all around the world. It won the Amnesty International Prize in Holland. The live television coverage of this incident on June 12, 2000 got the highest television ratings in Brazilian history.
