Del Mar is a city located in San Diego County, California. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,389. The San Diego County fair is hosted on the Del Mar Fairgrounds every summer.

Del Mar is located at 32°57'42" North, 117°15'52" West (32.961780, -117.264517)sup .

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.6 km² (1.8 mi²). 4.4 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.93% water.

The racial makeup of the city is 94.14% White, 0.25% African American, 0.34% Native American, 2.87% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 0.57% from other races, and 1.71% from two or more races. 3.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,178 households out of which 15.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.8% are married couples living together, 4.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 50.3% are non-families. 36.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.01 and the average family size is 2.61.

In the city the population is spread out with 13.6% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 33.1% from 25 to 44, 33.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 105.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 105.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $81,001, and the median income for a family is $92,270. Males have a median income of $71,250 versus $50,069 for females. The per capita income for the city is $62,425. 8.7% of the population and 7.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.6% of those under the age of 18 and 8.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Del Mar has the highest median household income of any incorporated place in San Diego County.
