Porterville is a city located in Tulare County, California. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 39,615. Locally known as the "armpit of the San Joaquin," Porterville suffers from exceptionally high poverty and teen pregnancy rates. Porterville is home to the oldest high school band in California, the Porterville Panther Marching Band.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 36.4 km² (14.1 mi²). 36.3 km² (14.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.50% water.

The city gained some notoriety from the similarly-titled song by Creedence Clearwater Revival, included on the band's eponymous debut album in 1968.
