Porterville
is a city located in Tulare County, California. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 39,615. Locally known as the "armpit of the San Joaquin," Porterville suffers from exceptionally high poverty and teen pregnancy rates. Porterville is home to the oldest high school band in California, the Porterville Panther Marching Band.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 36.4 km² (14.1 mi²). 36.3 km² (14.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.50% water. of 2000, there are 39,615 people, 11,884 households, and 9,174 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,091.8mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 54.75% White, 1.28% African American, 1.73% Native American, 4.63% Asian, 0.15% Pacific Islander, 32.71% from other races, and 4.75% from two or more races. 49.45% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.There are 11,884 households out of which 47.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.1% are married couples living together, 17.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.8% are non-families. 19.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.20 and the average family size is 3.62. In the city the population is spread out with 34.3% under the age of 18, 10.8% from 18 to 24, 28.0% from 25 to 44, 17.5% from 45 to 64, and 9.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 96.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.0 males. The median income for a household in the city is $32,046, and the median income for a family is $35,136. Males have a median income of $31,171 versus $23,737 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,745. 25.7% of the population and 20.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 33.7% of those under the age of 18 and 6.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line. The city gained some notoriety from the similarly-titled song by Creedence Clearwater Revival, included on the band's eponymous debut album in 1968. |
