) in Ringkjøbing County on the west coast of the Jutland peninsula in west Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 466 km², and has a population of 18,070 (2005). Its mayor is Jørgen Nørby, a member of the Venstre (Liberal Party) political party.
The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Lemvig. The town has a population of 7,282. Neighboring municipalities are Struer to the east, Thyborøn-Harboøre to the north, and Ulfborg-Vemb to the south. Most of its northern border is defined by the waters of i of water connected to the North Sea, which lies directly to the west of the municipality. The waters of the North Sea enter the i), a shallow sound that separates the island of Vendsyssel-Thy to the north of the municipality from the rest of the Jutland Peninsula. A significant part of its southern border is defined by the waters of i. A string of islands define the western perimeter of the waters south of the municipality; some of these islands belong to the municipality, and others belong to its southern neighbor, Ulfborg-Vemb. These waters at the municipality's southern border, encompassing the three fjords, plus i) lies north of the town of Ferring. The municipality was created in 1970 as the result of a i ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with existing Thyborøn-Harboøre municipality to form the new Lemvig municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 510 km² and a total population of 22,760 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Midtjylland ("Mid-Jutland Region"). table ("planet trail") at the edge of Lemvig town shows a model of the solar system at a scale of 1:1.000.000.000. In a small park at the edge of the town you find the sun, 1.4 metres in diameter. The other planets follow along a path far out of town, represented as small bronze balls on granite pedestals. Lemvig is a 750 years old market town, and received its municipal charter in 1545. One of the landmarks of Lemvig is the town church from the 13th century. The old town is situated between an inlet, a lake and some hills. The nearby areas of natural beauty were shaped during the last Ice Age. The town is situated 10 kilometers (6¼ miles) from the North Sea, 375 kilometers (234 miles) from Copenhagen, Denmark's capital, and 781 kilometers (488 miles) to London, England (as the crow flies). |
