Donna Fargo on November 10, 1945 in Mount Airy, North CarolinaDonna Fargo is an American singer, best known for her 1972 hit "The Happiest Girl in the Whole U.S.A.," which hit#1 on the Billboard country music charts. Fargo was a rarity in the early 1970s, a country female singer-songwriter. "Happiest Girl in the Whole U.S.A." not only topped the Country charts, it made a short-lived appearance on the pop charts as well. Her second single, "Funny Face," did the same. Fargo's hits included "Superman," "You Can't Be A Beacon (If Your Light Don't Shine)," "Don't Be Angry," and a song written for her late mother, "You Were Always There."
Fargo left Mount Airy after high school, and graduated from High Point College. She went on to record a string of#1 hits from her aforementioned breakout hit in 1972 until 1978. She was given her own television variety show, , in 1978, and later departed from public view, guest-starring in the 1980s on television shows such as . Fargo disappeared from public view after announcing in 1978 that she had multiple sclerosis. Nothing was heard from her until 1987 when she reappeared with singer Billy Joe Royal on a top ten duet entitled "Members Only." Donna Fargo is now retired from the music business and finds strength in the faith healing teachings of Kenneth Hagin and Kenneth Copeland. It must also be noted that Fargo sold millions of records and became the first country female singer to score back to back million selling singles. This was a major accomplishment for a country music singer. Fargo score big hits with "Do I Love You", "Some Special" and "That Was Yesterday" which reached #1 in 1977. Warner Brothers had established Donna Fargo as their big money maker in the mid seventies selling millions of dollars worth of merchindise. It was at this upmost time in her career where she was selling concert tickets to sell out crowds and was named one of the top ten most paid entertainers in country music...when she was handed the dreadful news she had MS. This curtailed her career and deposited her in the breakheart passage of stars who have trouble rekindling their career. Fargo was down for a while but she managed to stumble back on the music scene with impressive new songs that generated a stir in music biz. Fargo, however would not relive the success she had in the seventies as it was apparent at this time that nashville was now on the verge of a younger more immpressive line of stars that included Alan Jackson and Randy Travis. Fargo remained on the scene throughout the 80's and 90's performing at major country music shows and long emgagements in Las Vegas. It is without a doubt that Donna Fargo was the main inpact with the youth movement to country music in the seventies and the music business needs to reconize this lady for all her contributions to country music. It has been memtioned that hollywood has had there eye on Fargo for a major motion picture of her life...it would be an entertaining epic of a sweet lady who visited music biz with a song to be sung. Donna Fargo will always be a star among country muisc. Donna Fargo continues to provide entertainment to the country music scene with her Collection of Greeting Cards and the many books she writes. She is indeed a person who has brought such joy to the world with her gift of music and words. !-- Saved in |
