It is located in the Ruhr area between Duisburg and Essen, bordering to south of the City of Oberhausen and 30 km to the north-east of Düsseldorf.

It is home to many companies, especially in the food industry such as the ALDI Sued Company (Karl Albrecht), AP, OBI, te Plus Group and the Wissoll Group.

Mülheim is twinned with Darlington in England, Tours in France, Kuusankoski in Finland, Opolein Poland, and Kefar Sava in Israel.

Fritz Thyssen, an industrialist associated with the Nazi Party of Adolf Hitler was born here in 1873. He fled the party following the events of Kristallnacht and was eventually captured. He was imprisoned in the concentration camp at Sachsenhausen until the end of the war. Following that, he fled to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he died in 1951.Helge Schneider, an actor, film and theatre director, comic, singer and musician was born here in 1955.
