As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 90,327 and the density of 192.37 persons per km². The total area is 469.54 km².

The city was founded on January 1, 1947.

The ruins of Shibata castle are the main visitor attraction and provide the backdrop to the spring cherry blossom viewing parties. Also of note is the Shimizuen garden and Ijimino park.
